Follow the water! Locating the pipe is not usually too difficult when your water main is flooding the yard. When the leak is that bad, the water flow will lead you toward the pipe. As you start digging where the water has flooded worst, you will find water coming into the hole from one side. Continue digging in that direction. As you progress, you may find you need to turn the main off to prevent flooding the hole. When you get to that point, occasionally turn the water back on briefly to verify the direction you should be digging in. We are always happy to do the digging for you, but digging labor time is usually the most expensive part of a repair job. Any time you spend digging is a direct reduction on the cost of the job. See our Emergency Water Shut-off guide if you need help turning off your water main.
